UAE Stands with Afghanistan After Deadly Bus Crash Claims 79 Lives

The United Arab Emirates has extended its deepest condolences to Afghanistan after a horrific bus accident in Herat province killed at least 79 people. The tragedy, which unfolded late Tuesday evening, left the entire region in shock and mourning. In an official statement, the UAE’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed solidarity with Afghanistan and offered heartfelt sympathy to the families of the victims, while wishing the injured a swift recovery.

A Night of Tragedy in Herat

The devastating incident occurred in Guzara district when an overcrowded bus collided with a truck and a motorcycle. The impact sparked a massive fire that engulfed the vehicle, leaving behind a charred shell of what was once a passenger bus. Rescue workers rushed to the scene, but the intensity of the flames made it nearly impossible to save lives or even identify many of the victims.

Authorities confirmed that among the dead were at least 19 children, making the loss even more heartbreaking. Only two passengers reportedly survived the inferno, both sustaining critical injuries.

Deportees Among the Victims

The victims of the crash were mostly Afghan migrants who had been deported from Iran. Over the past year, more than a million Afghans have been expelled from Iran due to tightening border policies and rising xenophobic tensions. For many families, the forced return journey is fraught with risks, including unsafe travel conditions and lack of resources.

Humanitarian organizations have repeatedly warned about the dangers facing deported Afghans, especially women and children. This tragic bus accident highlights the vulnerability of those caught between displacement and uncertain resettlement.

A Country Struggling with Road Safety

Road safety has long been a crisis in Afghanistan. Poor infrastructure, overloaded vehicles, reckless driving, and weak enforcement of traffic laws combine to create deadly conditions on the nation’s highways. Fatal crashes occur frequently, but few have been as devastating as this one.

Investigators believe that excessive speed and driver negligence played a role in the disaster. Afghan authorities have already ordered a probe into the incident, and the owner of the transport company has reportedly been arrested. Calls for stricter road safety regulations are growing louder as grieving families demand accountability.

UAE’s Message of Solidarity

The UAE’s message of condolence was more than symbolic—it reflected a deep sense of regional responsibility. Known for stepping forward during times of crisis, the UAE has often provided humanitarian support in Afghanistan, from disaster relief to healthcare assistance.

By standing with Afghanistan during this difficult moment, the UAE has once again underscored the importance of regional solidarity. For the families of the victims, this show of compassion offers a small measure of comfort amid unbearable grief.
