Qatar’s Tourism Sector Grows Steadily in H1 2025

Qatar’s tourism industry is showing strong momentum. In the first half of 2025, the country welcomed more than 2.6 million international visitors, marking a 3% rise compared to the same period last year. This steady growth reflects Qatar’s success in attracting both regional and global travellers.

Diverse Visitor Origins Power Growth

The majority of visitors came from Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, making up around 36% of total arrivals. Europe followed with 26%, while Asia and Oceania contributed 22%. The Americas and other Arab nations each accounted for 7%. Among the fastest-growing visitor groups were travellers from the UK, US, South Africa, China, and Australia, showing Qatar’s expanding reach beyond its immediate region.

Multi-Access Entry Strategy Pays Off

Qatar’s visitor growth is not just about its world-class attractions, but also about how easy it is to enter the country. The nation has embraced a multi-access strategy, with 57% of visitors arriving by air, 33% by land, and 9% by sea. This flexibility makes it easier for tourists from different regions to include Qatar in their travel plans, whether for a stopover, short break, or extended holiday.

Hotels See Better Business

The hospitality industry is enjoying a noticeable boost. Hotels recorded an average occupancy rate of 71% in the first half of the year, up by two percentage points compared to 2024. A total of 5.23 million hotel nights were sold, representing a 7% increase over the same period last year. This is a clear sign that visitors are not only coming to Qatar but are also staying longer and exploring more.

Tourism: A Pillar of Economic Strategy

Tourism is becoming a key part of Qatar’s economic diversification plan. In 2024, the sector contributed around QR55 billion, or roughly USD 15 billion, to the country’s GDP — about 8% of the total economy. This was a 14% year-on-year increase. Qatar’s Tourism Strategy 2030 aims to grow this contribution to between 10% and 12% of GDP, and the 2025 numbers suggest the country is well on track to achieve that.

What’s Fueling the Momentum

Much of this growth is driven by the work of Visit Qatar, the country’s tourism promotion authority. Its “Moments Made for You” summer campaign targeted both the GCC and global markets. A high-profile promotional film featuring football legend David Beckham has also helped spotlight Qatar’s mix of modern luxury and deep-rooted heritage.

In addition, Qatar’s growing calendar of events is proving to be a magnet for tourists. Highlights in 2025 have included the Qatar Toy Festival, Doha Jewellery & Watches Exhibition, Qatar International Food Festival, and whale shark tours — offering a mix of culture, entertainment, and nature-based experiences.

Why This Matters

Qatar is not just attracting tourists; it is building long-term momentum. The combination of strategic marketing, improved accessibility, and strong hospitality infrastructure is delivering results. Higher visitor numbers mean more spending in hotels, restaurants, retail, and attractions — which strengthens the broader economy.

If this trend continues, Qatar could soon secure its position as one of the world’s most sought-after travel destinations, blending modernity, tradition, and hospitality in a way that appeals to travellers from every corner of the globe.
