Saudi-Funded Teaching Hospital Ushers New Era in Bengkulu’s Healthcare
In a milestone event that highlights nearly five decades of Saudi–Indonesian cooperation, the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) inaugurated the Bengkulu University Hospital in Sumatra, Indonesia. Built with a concessional loan of 22 million dollars, this facility is more than just a hospital—it is a modern center for teaching, research, and medical care that promises to uplift both healthcare services and medical education in the region.
A Celebration of Partnership and Shared Ambitions
The inauguration ceremony was attended by senior Indonesian officials, the Rector of Bengkulu University, the Vice-Governor of Bengkulu Province, and representatives from the SFD. The event was led by Sultan Al-Marshad, the CEO of SFD, who emphasized that the hospital marks a milestone in strengthening healthcare access for the people of Bengkulu and beyond.
Saudi Arabia has been supporting development projects in Indonesia since 1976. Over the years, the SFD has financed 12 projects worth nearly 396 million dollars, covering sectors like healthcare, education, and infrastructure. The Bengkulu University Hospital is the latest addition to this enduring partnership.
Healthcare and Education Hand in Hand
This hospital is unique because it is designed not only to provide advanced healthcare services but also to serve as a teaching and research hub. Medical students will now have the opportunity to learn directly in a state-of-the-art facility while serving the surrounding community. The hospital is expected to benefit hundreds of thousands of people annually, expanding access to essential health services while also strengthening the capacity of future healthcare professionals.
Built for Safety and Learning
The hospital was constructed with modern safety standards, including the use of base isolator technology to withstand earthquakes—a first for Bengkulu. Covering nearly 14,000 square meters on more than 18,000 square meters of land, the complex includes several multi-story buildings designed to support medical and academic needs.
It features 120 patient beds, seven medical specialties ranging from surgery to pediatrics and obstetrics, and a three-floor learning laboratory for research and training. In addition, the facility houses a mosque, laboratories, parking, and other supporting infrastructure.
Strengthening Ties Between Saudi Arabia and Indonesia
The new hospital is part of a broader wave of cooperation between the two countries. In recent years, Saudi Arabia and Indonesia have signed multiple agreements to strengthen ties in the healthcare and education sectors. These agreements include medical training exchanges, scholarships for Indonesian students, and new research collaborations.
For Indonesia, this aligns with its national vision to expand higher education opportunities and build stronger international partnerships. For Saudi Arabia, it reflects a growing role in global development, with a strong focus on projects that support human-centered growth.
A Human-Centered Step Forward
At its core, the Bengkulu University Hospital represents more than just an infrastructure project. It symbolizes shared progress, resilience, and opportunity. Patients in the Bengkulu region will now have access to modern healthcare services, while students will gain the chance to train in a facility that prepares them for future challenges.
The project also reflects Saudi Arabia’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those focused on health, education, and building resilient infrastructure. It is a clear example of how international cooperation can bring real change to local communities.
As the hospital opens its doors, it stands as a beacon of partnership between Saudi Arabia and Indonesia, delivering both immediate healthcare benefits and long-term educational impact.
