Saudi Arabia Slams Israeli Ground Assault in Gaza City
Saudi Arabia has strongly denounced Israel’s new ground operation in Gaza City, condemning it as a violation of human rights and international law. In a statement by the Saudi Foreign Ministry on September 17, the kingdom called the assault “in the strongest terms,” and urged the United Nations Security Council to intervene immediately.
The ministry accused Israel of causing “killing, starvation and forced displacement of Palestinians.” It said these actions threaten to deepen an already dire humanitarian crisis in Gaza, particularly in Gaza City, which has been under intense military pressure.
Saudi Arabia’s condemnation comes amid a chorus of international criticism. Qatar also criticized the operation, saying it appears to be a continuation of what they describe as a “war of genocide” against Palestinians. China, too, urged international safeguards for civilians and called for accountability under international law.
On September 16, Israel began its ground assault aimed at seizing control of Gaza City’s main urban areas. The move followed weeks of warnings from Israeli leaders and has triggered fears of large-scale displacement and civilian suffering.
Adding fuel to the debate, a recent United Nations Commission of Inquiry concluded that Israel had committed genocide in Gaza. Israel’s ambassador in Geneva rejected the findings, calling them “scandalous” and “fake,” and accused the commission of being influenced by Hamas.
Saudi Arabia also criticized the international community for what it described as a lack of decisive action. The Foreign Ministry urged the Security Council’s permanent members to take immediate steps to halt what it called an “ongoing machine of killing, starvation and displacement.”
The kingdom reaffirmed its commitment to humanitarian law, stressing that all military operations must preserve innocent life and prevent what it called acts of genocide. It called on the world to protect civilians, allow the flow of humanitarian aid, and enforce respect for legal and moral norms.
Insight & Context
Humanitarian crisis intensifies
Gaza’s population, already suffering from shortages of food, fuel, shelter, and medicine, is being stretched to the limit. The ground offensive raises fears of mass displacement and blocked access to life-saving aid.
Legal implications
Saudi Arabia, alongside Qatar and China, is emphasizing that the operation may breach international humanitarian law. The U.N. genocide report and widespread international concern make this a critical moment for accountability.
Regional and global pressure
Saudi Arabia’s statement adds to mounting diplomatic pressure on Israel. Human rights organizations and several nations are urging a ceasefire or at least immediate protection for civilians. The crisis is also dominating discussions at the United Nations Security Council.
Shadow of displacement
One of the main fears is the forced evacuation of Gaza City’s residents toward the south, often under unsafe and harsh conditions. Saudi Arabia warned that this mass displacement not only deepens human suffering but also threatens wider regional peace and stability.
