CBSE Moves Class 10 Second Board Exam to May as UAE Schools Welcome Change

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in India has officially shifted the second, optional board exam for Class 10 students from April to May. This change, which is part of the new dual-exam system starting in 2026, has been met with relief and cautious optimism by CBSE schools in the UAE. What’s Changing?

From 2026, CBSE board exams for Grade 10 will be held twice a year. The first exam is mandatory and will be scheduled in February, while the second exam will now be optional and held in May instead of April.

Students can use the second attempt to improve their grades or cover subjects in which they did not perform well in the first exam.

Why UAE Schools Approve

Schools in the UAE had raised concerns that the April date clashed too closely with the start of the new academic year abroad. Having exams in April would have delayed Grade 11 admissions and disrupted schedules. The shift to May gives students and schools more breathing room.

The change is viewed as more student-friendly. It reduces the pressure of high-stakes testing by offering a second chance. School leaders say the move reflects an effort to put student needs first.

What Challenges Remain

May falls at a time when many schools begin their new academic year. This could lead to exam disruptions, missed lessons, or clashes with other school activities.

Another challenge is the delay in revaluation or verification of answer sheets. Since the second exam follows the first, rechecks for February exams will likely take place only after May, which could delay final results.

Teachers and school staff also face an extra workload. Preparing for two board exam cycles each year, along with supporting students who opt for the second exam, will require significant planning and effort.

Bigger Picture

The dual exam system is part of wider reforms under India’s National Education Policy 2020. The policy aims to reduce exam stress and make assessments more flexible and fair.

In many UAE CBSE schools, parents and educators welcome these reforms, especially when they bring more clarity to what has often been an uncertain academic calendar.

What Students and Parents Should Know

Students who are unhappy with their February performance can choose to appear in May for improvement. However, taking the second exam will mean additional study time, possible extra fees, and time away from new classes.

Parents should stay in close contact with their child’s school to understand how May’s exam schedule will fit into the academic year. Schools are expected to hold orientation sessions for parents and students to explain the new exam cycle, timelines, and support systems.
