Areej Abdulla Matooq: A Mother’s Journey That Redefined Health, Purpose, and Food

Where It All Began: A Childhood Shaped by the Kitchen

Long before Areej Abdulla Matooq became a trusted name in healthy cooking and fermented foods, her journey began in a warm family kitchen. As a child, she was encouraged by her mother to step into the kitchen from a very young age. Cooking was never treated as a duty. Instead, it was a place of creativity, bonding, and discovery.

Those early moments shaped the way Areej saw food. She learned that cooking was not only about feeding the body, but also about expressing love, curiosity, and care. She enjoyed experimenting with ingredients, creating simple recipes, and feeling proud of what she made with her own hands.

This early encouragement planted a deep connection between Areej and food. At the time, she did not imagine that this connection would one day define her career, her mission, and her identity. But those childhood memories quietly built the foundation for everything that came later.

A Life-Changing Experience That Altered Her Path Forever

Years later, Areej’s relationship with food took on a deeper and more urgent meaning. When her daughter was just five years old, she was diagnosed with a chronic intestinal condition. Doctors explained that her child would likely need medication for the rest of her life.

For any mother, this news is overwhelming. For Areej, it was heartbreaking. She respected medical advice, but she also felt strongly that there had to be more she could do as a parent. She refused to believe that medication was the only solution.

This moment became a turning point. Areej began researching nutrition intensively, studying how food affects the gut, immunity, and overall health. She read, learned, experimented, and slowly transformed her home kitchen into a space focused on healing and balance.

Through consistent dietary changes, lifestyle adjustments, and deep commitment, her daughter’s condition began to improve. Over time, and by the grace of God, her daughter recovered. This experience did not just heal her child. It reshaped Areej’s purpose in life.

From Personal Healing to Public Awareness

After witnessing such a powerful transformation, Areej felt she could not keep her experience to herself. She knew that many families were facing similar challenges and searching for hope, guidance, and practical solutions.

This realization led her to launch her social media platform, where she began sharing healthy recipes, nutrition education, and lifestyle content. Her approach was honest and relatable. She did not speak as a doctor or a distant expert, but as a mother who had walked the journey herself.

People connected with her story because it was real. Her content focused on small, achievable changes rather than extreme diets or unrealistic promises. Over time, her platform became a space for learning, encouragement, and inspiration.

As she continued her research, Areej discovered the world of fermented foods and their powerful benefits for gut health and immunity. This discovery opened a new chapter in her journey.

Discovering the Power of Fermented Foods

Fermented foods quickly became a key part of Areej’s lifestyle and kitchen. She learned how these living foods support digestion, strengthen immunity, and restore balance in the body. Naturally, she began encouraging her audience to make fermented foods at home.

However, many people responded with the same message. They loved the idea, but they did not have the time or confidence to prepare them themselves. They wanted access to ready-made, high-quality fermented foods.

This feedback made Areej look closely at the local market. She realized that in Bahrain, fermented food options were very limited and mostly imported. There was a clear gap, both in availability and awareness.

Instead of seeing this as a challenge, she saw it as an opportunity.

Creating Fermendiet: A Business Built on Purpose

Inspired by her personal journey and the needs of her community, Areej created one of the first specialized fermented food workshops in Bahrain. This step felt natural to her. It was not about starting a business for profit alone. It was about creating impact.

Eventually, this vision evolved into Fermendiet, a brand dedicated to fermented foods, education, and healthier living. Fermendiet was born from real experience, real struggle, and real belief in the power of natural food.

From the beginning, Areej was clear about her mission. Fermendiet would not be just another food brand. It would be a platform to educate, inspire, and support long-term health through honest, living food.

Recognition That Confirmed the Journey Was Right

One of the proudest moments in Areej’s career came just one year after launching Fermendiet. The brand won the Best Startup Award, supported by Tamkeen and the Bahrain Economic Development Board.

At that stage, everything was still new. The business was being built from scratch, with constant learning, testing, and adjusting. Receiving such recognition so early felt deeply meaningful.

It was not just an award. It was validation that the mission mattered. Over time, Fermendiet went on to win three more awards, but the first one remains especially close to Areej’s heart.

It reminded her that purpose-driven work can truly make an impact.

A Bold Career Shift After 15 Years in Media

Before fully stepping into the food and wellness industry, Areej spent around 15 years working in media. She holds both a Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree in Media and built a strong professional career in the field.

However, her daughter’s health journey changed everything. What started as personal research turned into a deep professional interest. Areej realized she wanted to understand food not just emotionally, but scientifically.

She enrolled in culinary arts at Le Cordon Bleu in London and later completed an advanced nutrition diploma, also in London. These studies gave her a strong foundation in both cooking and nutritional science.

Eventually, she made the courageous decision to retire from her media career and fully dedicate herself to her passion. Four years ago, this commitment officially turned into launching Fermendiet as a full-time profession.

Challenges of Starting From Zero

Entering a completely new industry was not easy. Areej faced uncertainty, self-doubt, and the challenge of building credibility in the food production space. She had to learn everything from product consistency and operations to customer trust and business management.

Yet, she soon realized that her background in media was not a disadvantage. It became one of her greatest strengths. Her experience helped her communicate her message clearly, create meaningful content, and market Fermendiet in a way that connected deeply with people.

By combining her media skills with her passion for health and food, she created a brand that felt both professional and personal.

Expanding Fermendiet Beyond Borders

Today, Fermendiet is entering an exciting phase of growth. The brand is expanding into exhibitions and trade shows, participating in both local and international events for the first time.

These platforms allow Areej and her team to reach new audiences, build stronger brand awareness, and educate more people about fermented foods and their benefits for gut and immune health.

At the same time, Fermendiet is actively working on launching a new line of fermented products. This step supports the brand’s long-term vision of innovation, accessibility, and regional growth.

Despite expansion, Areej remains deeply committed to staying true to Fermendiet’s core values.

A Lesson That Changed Everything

One of the most important lessons Areej learned throughout her journey is that perfection is not required to begin. For a long time, she believed she needed to have everything ready before taking the next step.

Experience taught her otherwise.

Growth came through action, learning, and real-life practice. Today, she moves forward with courage, tests ideas, listens to feedback, and improves step by step. Instead of waiting for the perfect moment, she focuses on consistency and intention.

This mindset continues to guide both her personal growth and her business decisions.

Measuring Success Through Impact, Not Numbers

For Areej, true success is not measured by sales alone. It is measured by impact. Every day, she receives messages from people sharing how Fermendiet products helped them improve digestion, strengthen immunity, or reduce their dependence on medication.

These messages mean everything to her. They remind her that what she does goes far beyond selling food. It is about helping people reconnect with their health and their bodies.

She hopes to be remembered as someone who turned a personal journey into meaningful change. Someone who educated, inspired, and helped others return to healthier living through natural, honest food.

Words to Her Younger Self

If Areej could speak to her younger self at the beginning of her career, she would offer simple advice. Trust your journey. Do not wait for the perfect moment to start.

She would remind herself that clarity comes through experience, not overthinking. Stay curious, keep learning, and never be afraid to change direction when your purpose becomes clearer.

Setbacks are not failures. They are part of building something meaningful. By leading with heart, patience, and purpose, she believes that the right people will always find your work.
