Saudi Arabia’s Sports Push Under Vision 2030 Gathers Momentum
Saudi Arabia is accelerating its efforts under the Vision 2030 plan with a wave of new sports projects, infrastructure upgrades, international partnerships, and policies to make sports a central part of economic growth, social well-being, and global visibility. Here’s what is happening and what it means.
Major Investments and Infrastructure Upgrades
The Kingdom has committed more than 450 million US dollars for sports-related initiatives for the 2024 to 2025 period. These funds cover support for clubs, increasing fan attendance, improving governance, and accelerating digital transformation.
Several large-scale stadium and sports complex projects are underway. A 3.3 billion US dollar sports complex is in development in partnership with international companies. It will feature a high-tech football academy, residential zones including thousands of homes and villas, and cutting-edge sports technology.
Vision 2030 projects such as Qiddiya and the Sports Boulevard in Riyadh are also being expanded. The Sports Boulevard is a massive linear park designed with multiple sports facilities, green spaces, walking and cycling trails. It is a flagship example of combining lifestyle, environmental goals, recreation, and tourism.
Policy, Participation and Social Impact
To encourage greater participation, Saudi Arabia is pushing grassroots programs and “Sport for All” initiatives. According to government data, the share of Saudis engaging in regular physical activity has risen sharply from around 14 percent in 2017 to more than 58 percent in 2024.
Club support is another key priority. Both private and public clubs are receiving financial backing. Public clubs in the top football tiers are in line for annual allocations, while private clubs are also receiving sustained support to grow and compete at higher levels.
Global Events and Image Building
Hosting major international sports events is central to Saudi Arabia’s strategy. Riyadh is preparing to host the 2026 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games, marking another step in the Kingdom’s rise as a global sports hub.
The Saudi Pro League continues to attract top international football talent, raising the country’s visibility on the global stage. Beyond football, other sports are gaining attention with increasing investments.
Women’s sports are also being given more visibility. A 24-hour women’s sports channel is set to launch, in partnership with the Saudi Football Federation and global broadcasters. This move comes at the same time as the new Saudi Women’s Premier League season, offering greater opportunities for female athletes and fans.
Challenges and Insights
Cost and sustainability remain important concerns. Large-scale infrastructure projects and global event hosting require long-term maintenance, environmental planning, and ensuring that communities stay engaged beyond the launch phase.
Social change is another factor. Growing participation among women and youth represents both an opportunity and a challenge. Policies must carefully balance cultural traditions with the need for inclusion and modernization.
The return on investment is also critical. To justify the billions being spent, these projects must deliver not only international branding but also measurable economic results. This includes job creation, tourism growth, local business development, and healthier populations.
What This Means Going Forward
Saudi Arabia is increasingly serious about making sports a pillar of its non-oil economy. Vision 2030 sees sports not simply as entertainment, but as a vehicle for urban development, public health, global influence, and economic diversification.
As new stadiums rise, leagues expand, and women’s sports gain visibility, the Kingdom is reshaping what it means to invest in sports at scale. If Saudi Arabia can balance vision with execution, these initiatives could bring long-term benefits and lasting change.
